Diagnostic Laparoscopy: Finding the Cause of Pelvic Symptoms

A direct look inside the pelvis to find the cause of symptoms

Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive "look and see" procedure used when the cause of pelvic pain, infertility, or an abnormal finding on scan cannot be determined by non-invasive tests alone. A thin camera is introduced through a small umbilical incision to directly visualise the uterus, tubes, ovaries, and surrounding structures.

Common reasons for referral

  • Chronic pelvic pain of unclear cause
  • Suspected endometriosis
  • Unexplained infertility

If a treatable problem is found, it can often be corrected in the same sitting, avoiding the need for a second operation.
