Keyhole removal of one or both ovaries
Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of an ovary, performed for conditions such as ovarian cysts that are large, persistent, or suspicious, endometriomas, or as a risk-reducing procedure in women with a strong family history of ovarian cancer.
When it is considered
- Persistent or complex ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis affecting the ovary
- Torsion (twisting) of the ovary with compromised blood supply
- Risk-reducing surgery in high-risk individuals
Where possible, only the affected ovary is removed, and the surgical team discusses the impact on hormonal function beforehand, especially in younger women.
